The new album from Dutch Uncles, out 17th Feb with ace die cut cover. Sold Out. Big Balloon Baskin' Combo Box Same Plane Dream Achameleon Hiccup Streetlight Oh Yeah The Dutch Uncles sound fresh and hip, although they play progressive rock.
The songs have poprock structures, and have short durations. There are no extensive guitarsoloss or keyboardsolos, but every song is skillfully crafted and played, with dozens of rhythm chanes, atypical rhythms, a variety of instruments. The songs build, have dynamics, tension and it never gets boring. The fact that the songs are short is their strongest feature.
The vocals sound reminiscent to Kate Bush and Brian Ferry, and I can imagine not may will like it, although the singer is very capable and has an excellent technique. And that's exactly what you get, especially because singer Duncan Wallis has an adrogynous voice, sometimes reminiscent of Kate Bush but also similar to Brian Ferry and even a Bowiesque vocal approach.
The band has many influences aswell form eighties new wave like Talking Heads and The Fixx. Although the songs have difficult rhythms and the musicians are very skillfull, the songs are very catchy, and enjoyable. To me, this band is the perfect example how to be extremely talented and skillfull and still create perfect popmusic. On top of that the production is top notch. Dutch Uncles is a band that should be more adored by musicfans, on the pop- and prog side of music.
